    SAP Functional Consultants - Functional consultants are responsible for designing the SAP implementation solution based on the unique requirements of your company. In other words the functional consultants are business process experts and are non-technical. Functional consultants normally use their process knowledge to calculate the impact of the SAP implementation on the company's processes. Functional consultants are thus concerned with SAP functions and processes that will generate the data and output for business.

    SAP Technical Consultants - Technical consultants are experts in information technology. Technical consultants normally assist in configuration of the SAP R3 installation. In many SAP implementations, technical consultants help in designing interfaces and customizations in R3. Finally, the SAP R3 technical consultants would be responsible for migration of data from the legacy system to the new SAP ERP implementation.

      In BW world, the terms "Functional" and "Technical" depends upon who you are working with (at least, in my experience). In some cases, they are used interchangeability, in some cases I have experienced that if you are not coding (extractor, ehancement etc) then you are functional, in some cases - if you are working on the requirements gathering and interacting with business you are called functional. Another variation is when people are exclusively working with queries, they are called functional.
