Deleting DSO change log u0096 risks and performance

I have an DSO that has about 1,5 million records in the change log. Is saving disk space the only reason for deleting this change log? I heard that having a smaller change log would speed up the activation of the DSO, is this true?

Are there any risks associated with deleting the change log. Has anyone had problems with short dumps and so on? I know I can’t populate info providers further up after deleting the change log.

How fast is the deletion of the change log? I know it depends on the system, but does anyone have experience with the number of records deleted per hour?

We use BI 7.0 SP12.
