Upgrade direct from 9.2.0.5 to 10.2?

We are currently running Oracle 9.2.0.5, on Windows, SAP 4.7 (Kernel 6.40). Are we able to directly upgrade to Oracle10.2?

We have read conflicting information from SAP and Oracle documentation, as follows:

SAP Note 948305 - Oracle Upgrade to 10g Release 2 (10.2) on Windows reads, "Section 1. Important general remarks - Note that you can only upgrade Oracle database version 9.2.0.6 or higher or Oracle 10g Release 1 (10.1.0.4) to Oracle 10g Release 2 (10.2)."

However, the "<a href="http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238/preup.htm#i1007718">Oracle Database Upgrade Guide 10g Release 2</a>" reads in Table 2-1 Upgrade Paths, "Direct upgrade from 8.1.7.4, 9.0.1.4 or higher, 9.2.0.4 or higher, and 10.1.0.2 or higher to the newest Oracle Database 10g release is supported. However, you must first apply the specified minimum patch release indicated in the Current Release column."

Thank you in advance.

Tina

Hello,

Oracle upgrade from 9.2.0.5 to 10.2 works.

I believe that it works. This way is also supported by oracle. I think SAP won't support you in case you have problems during the upgrade from 9.2.0.5 to 10.2.0.2 on windows, because they wrote clearly in their notes that they suggest the another way.

I would suggest you to separate SAP Oracle Databases (doings: mostly according to the SAP notes and SAP guides) and non-SAP Oracle databases (doings: mostyl according to oracle Metalink and oracle guides) for most activities from each other.

I would suggest you for this case to perform the upgrade according to this SAP note. Also, you should upgrade your database from 9.2.0.5 to 9.2.0.x (x>=6, better 9.2.0.8) and then upgrade to 10.2.0.2.

according to this Oracle document you should have at least 9.2.0.6, if you want to downgrade your database.

see the section:

<b>Supported Releases for Downgrading</b>

<u>http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/server.102/b14238.pdf</u>

According to the same Oracle guide the upgrade from 9.2.0.4 to 10.2.0.2 is supported. But if I were you, I would go for this case after the SAP note. Before SAP release a version, they test it again.

Also, at first: Upgrade from 9.2.0.5 --> 9.2.0.x (x>=6, better 9.2.0.8)

and then Upgrade from 9.2.0.x (x>=6) ---> 10.2.0.2

Best regards
