Santosh,

When you run your report the contents of the Rows and Columns are displayed. Free Characteristics are supplementary charactersitics that can be included in your report by the user if required.

It also provides further analysis of selections that are in your rows / columns. ie If you have a YTD figure, you might include the Fiscal Period characteristic in the Free Characteristic section. This gives the use the option of drilling into the YTD figure to see which months that values were posted against.

You could also use characteristics in the Free Characteristics section that have variables on them which are populated by the user when they run a report. By leaving the characteristic in the Free Characteristic section it wont appear in the report but it's part of the selection parameters. ie Company Code, if a person runs a report for one Company Code, they don't need to see it in the report hence you have that characteristic in the Free Characteristic section.

hai santosh,

Intially when u run ur report the Characteristics are in free Characteristics wont display the report but these charcs u use once in a while so then we keep them in free characteristics by doing this the performance of the report is good

Free chars are used for drill down in the report.

By default when query is excuted it will not display data for the chars in Free Char..In the report aft execution acc to ur needs u can drill down n luk for data.

Ex : Cost Center Analysis report lead column is Cost Center u can drill down on Cost Element n the corresponding cost elements will appear next to the lead column.
