variant configuration

Hi Gurus,

Can somebody help me out explaining Variant configuration and it's configuration settings in SAP SD? How does the system pick the price of the character elements in SAP. Do we maintain condition records for variant configuration. and please explain the difference between variant configuration and BOM.
