Restore dmp file :error during backup/restore: unable to open device

I received from a developer a dump database file (db.dmp) from sybase version

My environment is Sybase Central Version 16.

I tried without success on my server to restore the dump file.

We get this error message : "error during backup/restore: unable to open device"

Thanks if anybody could help me to figure out this issue with success.

Best Regards,

This will probably be easiest to troubleshoot if you use the isql client to issue a load database command rather than doing the load through Central. Are you able to log into ASE using isql?

If so, try to load the dump using a LOAD DATABASE command. Please post the exact command you ran and the messages returned.

If the error is explicitly about being unable to open the file, check permissions on the file and make sure that the user account that started ASE has read permissions on the file.

Are you sure the dump file comes from a 12.5 Sybase Adaptive Server Enterprise? It sometimes happens that people try loading dumps from a Sybase SQL Anywhere database into ASE. Both products had a 12.5 version.

The dump file might also be encrypted or compressed (or both).
Assuming you are on a UNIX platform, a quick way to verify that the dump file a plain ASE dump is to run "strings <dump_name> | more".
A plain (not compressed, not encrypted) ASE dump file will look something like this, with strings "VOL1", "HDR1", "HDR2", "EOF1", "EOF2" and the ASE version string being consistent features in dump files:

    strings test.dmp | more

    VOL1 0 7
    000100 17209 17209

    Sybase 0C63A
    0204803 Btest 00000000002000012803 0000002
    EOF3VOL1 7
