I think this is sequence

ALE->EDI-->EAI (XI) ?

I dont think this is the correct flow.

The technologies u have mebntioned are different and are used to different aspects. The evolution of XI could be seen in this manner

Standalone system -> Mutiple systems with point to point communication -> Business Connector -> SAP XI

EDI is a message format and a standard based on which various organization communiates. For difference between ALE and XI

Hi,

That doens't seem to be correct evolution flow.

ALE is proprietary to SAP and is used for communication between SAP systems.

EDI is general standard for exchanging information electronically. Refer following link for more info on EDI:

XI could be compared with middlewares like Tibco, MQ Series etc. which are used for integrating system landscapes by enabling message transfer and transformation.
