Do i need portal installation for ESS/MSS if i already have webspere

Hi,

we have websphere portal, sap netweaver 2004s (HR, ERP). Do i still need to activate sap portal if i want to use ESS and MSS (HR) and develop some abap webdynpro ?

can i deploy ESS and MSS component in ibm webspere ?
