Crystal reports hangs on opening .rpt file

Windows Server 2008 R2

Crystal report XI Release 2 (product version 11.5.10.1263)

The scale of the problem - we have a bit over 900 reports, only about 20% has the problem.

Crystal hangs when opening saved .rpt file, all on a local machine. To force it to open I have to restart Print Spooler service which then generates the message "report is using an incorrect printer, the default one will be used".

The server has only one printer driver installed - Microsoft XPS document writer, the same type of printer was selected on the machine the report was created - that printer was selected during the development process to enable access to A2 format as the majority of reports are exported as XLS files. "No printer" option was enabled before the report was saved on the server.

Two things:

most of the reports have 'No printer' option enabled in Page Setup

same reports were working just fine for months/years

My current workaround is to force Crystal to open, go to Page Setup options, disable/enable "No printer", save. then I can open the same report with no issues.

Event viewer on the server is not showing any errors.

There were no changes to the server - its uptime is a bit over 3 years now which puzzles me why all of a sudden it started happening.

Any advice will be appreciated.

Thank you

David

Hi Don,

thank you for the advice. I've installed it on the server so hopefully it will resolve the issue - unfortunately, not all reports are generated daily so I cannot confirm just yet.

is there any chance to get to the bottom of the issue and get an answer why suddenly after over 3 years it started happening?

thanks again

David

Hi David,

Windows XPS driver is a piece of crap, to put it bluntly... Some formats are not supported and issues with page rotation etc.

Even when using No Printer CR goes to the default printer to get some generic properties the formatting engine needs to build each page.

Install a HP generic printer on the Server and then it should work.
