Ruchitha,
CIM stands for Common Information Model. Its is a standard defined by DTMF (Distributed Task management Force), which is followed when we have a distributed environment.
As we are using SAP XI to integrate many systems, XI should be aware of all the systems present in the landscape (network), so that it has an idea of the type of the system.
Many scenarios can contain connections from/to many systems. Hence, everytime specifying each system specific configurations for each scenario, all the system landscape info. is present under a common folder, say SLD, in this case. All the detailed system description is mentioned in SLD, taking inputs of which, multiple scenarios are created.
