Separate commodity codes required for import & export

Hi

Based in the UK, we import from, and export to, countries inside & outside the EU.

When we buy from outside the EU, we have to use 10 character commodity codes, so we hold these against the material master; the vendor then includes that code in their documentation so the correct tarriffs are applied at point of entry into the UK.

But we may also buy the same material from within the EU; in which case we have to use 8-character EU codes; and even in cases where we only buy from outside the EU, we may export to within the EU. Export commodity codes are only 8 characters long in the UK.

Although commodity code is shown on separate tabs for import & export in the material master, both actually point to the same field MARC-STAWN - so we can't hold separate codes for import & export. Even if we could, where we by from inside & outside the EU we'd need 10 character codes for outside & 8 character for within the EU for the purchase side.

Can anyone suggest how we can get around this problem?

Thanks
Jonathan

see the IMG activity "Commodity Codes: Convert Export into Import Code Numbers"

you can define a relation between your long number and the 8 digit number. SAP will then be able to pull the right corresponding value into your purchase order.

    Thanks Jürgen

Actually I have discovered that although the SAP Intrastat report shows the full 10 character commodity code assigned to a material when you view it on screen, when it produces actual output (to print or to a file), when reporting in GB it truncates 10 character commodity codes to 8 - so provided we assign 10 character codes to the materials so they appear correctly on purchase orders, we'll be OK without having to map between the two as you describe.

    • Yes I knew this, but your question sounded more complicated, now it is just reduced to Intrastat.

I understood that you wanted 10 digits for imports and 8 digits for exports.
