mandatoy values for variant configuration

hi gurus,

This is regarding variant configuration. we are passing characteristic values through the 'BAPI_SALESORDER_CREATEFROMDAT2' .Can any one tell me the mandatory values we need to pass through this BAPI. and can any tel me where can i get the configuration id value to pass. pls tellme in breif hw to execute this BAPI.
