Hi,
Is it mandatory to have R-3 and BI patch levels to be the same?
In case if i dont want to install the complete Enterprise Portal but would only prefer to have the portal runtime installed for BI reports on the same BI server, how should i acheive this? And in that case i may not need a single sign on to be configured, am i correct?
thanks,
R/3 and BI can be at different patch levels.
You cannot install BI JAVA usage type without EP Usage type.
Once you install it is not mandatory to use the EP Usage type. After installing you need to do the config as per note 917950 and configuring SSO is one of the steps. BI JAVA will not work without SSO between EP and BI system.

Hi,
'You cannot install BI JAVA usage type without EP Usage type.'
and
'Once you install it is not mandatory to use the EP Usage type.' give a feeling that they contradict each other.
I would like to know why is a single sign on is necessary if i dont intall the complete portal? i can always only have portal runtime installed(using BI Java) on the same BI server to see the web reports.
Am i right? please explain.
Since the Java-based BEx Web application in SAP NetWeaver BI is a software solution that contains both SAP NetWeaver ABAP and NetWeaver Java, the entire NetWeaver 2004s system (that is, ABAP and Java) must be at the same Support Package Stack level and new Support Package Stacks must always be imported simultaneously. Different ABAP and Java Support Package Stack levels are not supported.
See the special remarks in Note 1013369.

Hope it Helps

Hi Chetan,
What i could find out is we can have different R-3 patch levels and different BI patch levels and it works fine.
But my actual problem is how to i avoid complete portal installation? i.e IS it possible for me to use on the portal runtime component to display BI7 reports on the browser.
And if it is possible to avoid complete portal installation, it wont(shouldnt) even ask me for a login in portal after i execute a BI report, correct? So i dont need a SSO in that case!!
How do i achieve this? i just want the BI web reports to be seen and am not really interested in other features of portal at this stage.
thnx
