BW HANA Migration with different OS for Application and DB

Hi All,

We in preparation of BW Migration to HANA DB. Below is the source and Target Server details and already the dual stack split is completed.

Source Server :

Application : BW 7.01 SP08

Database : Oracle 11.2.04

CI : AIX 6.1 (Both DB and Application on the same server)

Target Server :

Application : BW 7.4 SP12

DB : HANA 1.0 SP12

PAS/ASCS : Linux 6.6

We are using DMO for migration and are planning the migration as follows

1. Perform DMO for DB migration, the application remains on AIX and DB is moved to HANA.

2. After successful completion of DMO, we plan to install ASCS and PAS on Linux server.

My question, What kernel version to be used during our DMO operations whether its AIX or Linux, because our DMO will run on AIX Server and after migration, initial application server will be AIX before I do ASCS and PAS on Linux server.

Regards

One more addition:

First update your kernel to latest release on AIX (with latest top up of DBA tools, tp, R3trans, R3load, R3ldctl and all other latest components) then do DMO migration to combine upgrade+migration and the last step is to split ASCS/Install on Linux. Here you need to change your kernel.

I do remember that 7.01 to 7.4 is a 2 step migration! DMO guide says it's possible to combine both but check again.

Hello,

If you are using DMO then you cannot change target OS during migration as it uses in place migration. So, kernel required would be for AIX only.

You can change it afterwards. Please refer to below link for more information.

Hi Ponnusamy,

You'll need the kernel for both your source system and target during the migration, more precisely the database depended kernel. You may also need to update your kernel on your source system before the migration process gets started, sometimes the old kernel like R3trans, tp, or Brtools for Oracle will cause problem during the migration phase.

I'm a moderator in this space, I mean tag, and I modified several parts of your question for clarity, and to practice using the new moderation tools. I hope you don't mind.

Unfortunately I don't have an answer to your question, though I would guess you should use the highest kernel version you feel comfortable with as the end state. We have started a similar project; when I have time I will post a blog (probably in a UNIX tag space).

Also, once I am more familiar with the new SCN tags, I may suggest additional tokens that can cross-reference this topic into specific streams. I think.
