How to start my SAP career

I'm not so sure if this is the right place to ask. I'm trying to start a career in SAP but I don't know where to start. I thought this community might be able to help me.

I have worked as an XBase programmer for 7 years and 3 years using Oracle systems. But I switched career when I went abroad for a change. After 10 years, I decided to revive my IT career when I moved to Germany. I underwent re-training for Java and C# application development for 2 years and have been working as such for more than 2 years now. But realizing that SAP is a hot commodity especially here in Germany and surrounding areas, I thought I want to give it a try. But I really don't know how to begin.

Most of SAP job vacancies involve with ERP and I thought of getting into that aspect. However, a friend of mine who works in SAP consultancy team suggested that I should get involved with SAP ABAP due to my programming skills. When I check online, I've read that SAP ByDesign SDK is a more appropriate and logical scenario for my background. But when I went to an IT school in my area, it was suggested that since I have no previous knowledge nor experience with SAP, I should get basic and introductory courses. They even went further by suggesting consultancy course so I would be familiar with the overall view of each of SAP components then decide which specific aspect I want later on.

This is where I really get confused, and I am at odds of what I should do. Will you be kind enough to direct me, base on my IT background, the best place where I should start my SAP career? Your input on this matter will help me decide the best case scenario for me.

Thank you for your time and your support regarding my request. Looking forward to hear from you soon.
