Something other than the Portal Log Viewer??

Hello,

I have some developers who are having some trouble looking at the log files in the Portal. I know you can view logs through the Java Developer tab>>>Log viewer, but this seems to be a very cumbersome way to look at logs. Firstly, unless you know exactly what you're looking for, we've have numerous logs, defaultTrace and otherwise, that the search has to look through. So much so that it times out.

Secondly, the log viewer doesn't tell you which is the "active" log file...it's just shows all that are available (atleast at the Unix level I can sort them and see which one was the last written to; my developers however don't have this option).

Does anyone know of an easier way to search through log files, or filter them, in a way that will be quicker for developers who have no Administrative access to the OS level or otherwise? Could I not just delete these log files, or is this even recommended?

Thanks so much!

I'll award points for any helpful answers.
