Communication with XML between external system to SAP

I have to investigate, if it´s possible to send XML files between an external system and SAP.

Right now, SAP and the system are communicating by reading/sending textfiles.

Now it should be possible to do that over RFC. But with RFC, it´s only possible to call functions and using the data which is coming back in the exporting and tables, right? (That was, I have used RFC)

The SAP system is a 4.6C and as I know, it is only possible to communicate over RFC with this system. So is there another possibility to communicate with XML files, without saving the files to the SAP server and let the external system read this files?

I hope you know, what I mean.

Thank you for any advice!
