Which functionalities of BEx Web are requiring Portal runtime or JAVA stack

I would like to investigate which functionalities of BEx Web are requiring Portal runtime and which functionalities are requiring additional JAVA stack which must be installed on the application server?

If we are talking about Portal runtime that means that it need to be SAP Enterprise Portal or can it be any other portal?

Thanks, for any inputs

There was a really good presentation that covered this topic at the 2007 SAP NW BI and Portals Conference last March. The title was "Key Considerations for Upgrading to SAP NetWeaver BI 2004s", and the presenter was Ron Silberstein of SAP Labs.

    Basically, key points were:

    - BEx Web and BI Integrated Planning require BI Java.

    - BI Java is based on EP and AS Java

    - BEx Web requires the Java-based Portal runtime functionality for rendering iViews, etc.

    - BI Integrated Planning requires Web Dynpro-based Planning Modeler

    - Features of BEx in NW 2004s Requiring Portal runtime:

    - - BEx Web Appl Designer

    - - Export to PDF & Printing

    - - BI Integrated Planning

    - - Drag & Drop (Analysis Web Item)

    - - Web Items (Container Layout, Menu Bar, Tab Pages, ...)

    - - Formatted Reporting with BEx Report Designer

    - - Document Integration with storage in KM

Also, as I recall, the question about SAP EP being required was asked in several sessions, and everyone said that it was not required, only the Portal runtime.

    Hope this helps...

    Bob

I am trying to understand the purpose of the portal; is it necessary for viewing reports and web cockpits? Are there others that require the portal.

I am just new to SAP so sorry if this sounds like a dumb question.
