Which functionalities of BEx Web are requiring Portal runtime or JAVA stack

I would like to investigate which functionalities of BEx Web are requiring Portal runtime and which functionalities are requiring additional JAVA stack which must be installed on the application server?

If we are talking about Portal runtime that means that it need to be SAP Enterprise Portal or can it be any other portal?
