SAP KERNEL License

Need help understanding "SAP Kernel License". Based on reading through different Blogs and SAP web pages, am I wrong in that SAP Kernel is more or less a part of SAP Applications? I see that it's part of SAP MaxDB so I was assuming it comes with other SAP apps as well. I also see that it's upgraded based on code provide by down loads which makes me think that once you have it loaded you can upgrade just the Kernal without purchasing additional license.. I'm really guessing at this so anyone that can explain this in a simple manner would greatly be appreciated...

Hello Tom,

The SAP kernel is part of the SAP NetWeaver stack. It is a "collection" of executable (binary) files that makes the SAP system run.

SAP products (like ECC/ERP) run on top of SAP NetWeaver.

You would need a NetWeaver license (transaction SLICENSE) so the SAP kernel runs, besides other business / products related licenses.

Updating the SAP kernel does not require a new license. The new kernel will use the existing license.

The link shared by Imtiaz can help you as well.

SAP Kernel is part of Netweaver stack. Application license is what is required.

Please check https://www.sap.com/documents/2015/05/849f654b-277c-0010-82c7-eda71af511fa.html for more information on licensing.
