What is a BAPI

Hi experts,

I was talking with a colleague about the concept of BAPI and we have 2 different points of view:

1 - A BAPI is a standard function module with specific features like RFC calls. A custom copy of a standard BAPI is not a BAPI, but a FM.

2 - A BAPI can be every function module (standard or not) which has the same features as an standard BAPI. A custom copy of a standard BAPI remains as a BAPI.

I look forward for your comments.

Best regards,

Angel Cepa.

    Hi Angel,

BAPI's are similar to Function Module, using BAPI's you can upload the Data like BDC.

    1. BAPI's are the RFC enabled function modules, i.e u can connect to 3rd party systems using this. In BDC's we can't do this, it is local to SAP

    2. BDC's use transaction screen flow to update data base, but BAPI's use standard function modules to do this.

    3. Explicit commit work should be done to BAPI's, for BDC it is automatically done..

Just check the link below for all the links for each and every topic.

    Hi,

The standard BAPIs are associated with Business Objects which can be viewed in transaction swo1. Here we can attach any RFC function module to these Business Objects (how to is another topic). Such Function Modules can viewed in transaction BAPI. So BAPIs are the RFC FMs which appear in BAPI explorer.

So All BAPIs are RFC FMs but not all RFC FMs are BAPIs.

    Thanks..

    Hi Angel,

A custom copy of BAPI can also act as BAPI if and only if it is copied through the transaction SWO1, as Ordinary FM's have tables where as BAPI's have methods,events..etc. You can find this when you check any Business Object.
