conversion routine issue...........

Hi Experts,

i have a problem that .my R/3 side fields are having some conversion routine and where as in BW side the same fields don't have any conversion routines.

becuse of this it is giving some errors while loading the data.

and some of the fields are vice versa(i.e.R/3 side does not have any conversion routine and BW side those are having some conversion routines..eg:alpha conversion routine)

so can anyone please explain me what is the use of conversion routines and,what is the purpose of it.and give me some scenarios in which the conversion routines are used.do we need to write the conversion routines (scenario please)?.please explain me indetail.
