SAP MDM and SAP XI

Can any body explain me the relation of SAP MDM with SAP XI .I am working with a retail client (Time&Mngmnt) which has its Legacy System at Mainframe so I have map it into SAP R/3 so how does SAP MDM and SAP XI help in this respect................points will be given....
