Can anyone explain to me the concept of the integration server, integration engine and adapter engine? Thanks!
Hi
The<b> Integration Server</b> is the runtime component for receiving messages and controlling how these messages are forwarded. It has the Integeration Engine, Business Process Engine and Adapter Engine with it.
<b>Integration Engine</b> is used in implementing the message logic and Integeration logic.Message logic receives the message and send the message to the target system and ensures the factors such as quality of service, acknowledgement.
Integeration logic does the mapping, logical routing and the technical routing.
<b>Adapter Engine</b> is used to connect the XI with the SAP and Non-SAP systems by using various adapters such as IDOC,File,RFC,HTTP,SOAP,etc...
The main use of adapters is to transform the incoming message into Xi-SOAP format, or to transform the XI-SOAP message into legacy systems format. Since XI can understand only XI-SOAP formatted messages, When a Third-party System send messages to XI the adapter converts it to XI-SOAP format and sends it to Integration Engine.

Hi,
Integration engine and adapter engine are part of integration server. integration server is core component in SAP XI, which processes all messages involved. It understands only XML language.
Adapter Engine is the one where all the installed adapter on XI will get executed. All the adapter related execution takes place here.
The Integration Engine enables you to process XML messages exchanged between applications in heterogeneous system landscapes. Both applications of SAP components and external applications can communicate with the Integration Engine.

Hi
Integration Server=Integration engineAdapter EngineBusiness Process Engine
The Business Process Engine is the runtime component that executes collaborative integration processes
The Integration Engine is the processing pipeline for all XI messages. All messages are received in the special XI-SOAP format and processed in the Integration Engine in a consistent way.
The Central Adapter Engine connects the Integration Server to systems not based on Web Application Server v. 6.20 or higher. Decentralinstances of the adapter framework can also be installed.
IE works on ABAP Stack and AE works on Java Stack.

hi
the integration server is the one which holds all the 3 engines namely integration engine, adapter engine and the business process engine...
all the adapers except idoc and http reside on the adapter engine... we can say that this is necessary to execute the adapters configured.
as far as idoc and http, they reside on the integration engine.
the integration engine executes the pipeline steps.

Hi
Integration Server and Integration Engine are used synonymous with each other. But there is a sublte difference if you actually look into the XI architecture images provded by SAP.
The Integration Server contains,
1. Adapter Engine
2. Business Process Engine
3. Integration Engine.
So, taking this into picture I guess Integartion server is a collection of these 3 while integration engine is one of the runtime components of XI. All messages are processed in the Integration Engine.

Hi,
Integration Server is the combination of IE + AE + BPE.
Adapter Picks the Message from the Sender CC And Deliver it to the IE.
IE Deliver it to the IS Using the XI Adapter Internally
IS Process the Pipeline Steps And Send it to the Receiver By Using the Receiver Adapter
