What do you think about our new Q&A platform?

It was in need of polishing at the end of beta - especially the functionality related to Comments. The decision to permit deletion but not editing of own comments (for normal users) is a very strange one, I feel. Since uploading of images seems to function again, here is how stuff looks on desktop Chrome at 125% zoom:

Thanks a lot for your valueable feedback, Jānis.

there is definitely still a lot to do and improve and launching does not mean we stop working and improving.

Please Keep sharing this great feedback with us!

3

I tried to post a detailed response (as an answer) on how you can obtain the information, which you required, unfortunately, at submitting I got the following:

It turned out, the drafts were not saved, despite the messages, which claimed so and I am not tempted to write that again.

Until such kind of issues are resolved, it makes sense to consider an alternative platform to collect feedback.

I would like it better if I could find the questions I have asked.

8

It is not user friendly.

Can we go back to the old version?

It was so much better

Hey Team,

Congrats on migration. I am sure lots of improvements are in pipeline.

Ques: Are we done with "yearly leader board" and related pointing mechanisms?

Feedback:

Would be better if we can increase number of items in one view on questions list. Lots of scrolling there right now.

Good luck,

Swaroop

SAP BusinessObjects Strategy Management (SSM) content has now disappeared.

Following the move to the new format the engagement with the community around this product has reduced drastically. Now what content that there was has disappeared completely!

Basing the system purely on tags may be reasonable from a pure technical standpoint but is dependent on a) those tags functioning an b) users (who will have a wide variety of understanding of the importance of the tags) applying them correctly.

As a result a vital resource has been destroyed.

Very disappointing ( and that's a British understatement!)

Tags are a good thing for social networks like tweeter where you have millions and millions of users. But on a more closed community like this we need more structured group topics or what used to be spaces. I still don't know how to search for questions using tags. The quick start guide tells you how to Register, how to Write a blog post, and how to Ask a question but not how to Search for questions.

Also the lack of notification subscriptions is a minus. I normally contribute with answers to questions about a topic I have some experience with and that I feel I can be of some help. But I cannot login constantly to see what new questions have been posted.

From a design point of view I'm not a fan of flat, minimalistic, responsive web sites. I normally work on a desktop computer with a large monitor and I don't see the meaning of having to endlessly scroll down to view content I could previously see on one page. I understand there is a lot of mobile users now days but I can't imagine writing a long post or answering a question using a smartphone. I believe the majority of this community users still use desktop computers.

And it's difficult to distinguish action elements from static elements due to the simplistic design. I don't want skeumorphism back but I just feel it takes more time to do the same work with the new site designs which are hard on the eye due to their all white nature and few contrast characteristics. I'm not alone on this as Office 2016 users feel the same about this kind of design...

Due to missing functionality, inadequately realized tag navigation, and the many bugs, I fear that we will see a huge drop in user activity, and that it will take a long time for the SCN to recover from this.

A lot will depend on how fast SAP can develop the useability of the platform.

What I expect, is not a huge drop in user activity, but a huge increase of the workload for the moderators, who perform voluntarily work to keep the site as clean as possible.

Having in mind that moderator alerts will work differently now and that there seems to be less functionality than before - can moderators agree on a common approach how to report single answers or comments and somebody posts this in a blog with a few screenshots, so that we all can make things easier for them?

4

I think, that you both - Johan and Veselina - are right. Well, it happened already back in 2012, when new SCN was introduced. Then, it took 2-3 months to recover the level of activity known before. I do agree, though, that this time it might take much longer. Current platform doesn't seem to be fitting the needs of former SCN users... I think, that the entire population of SCN will have to 'migrate' as well. This new platform will hopefully attract new type of users and will endorse new type of user's activities. What is sure, though, that once Space concept is demolished, it will be no longer a platform for concrete problem solving, but rather a place for communications, idea's sharing and friendly chat.

15

but SCN is not and should never be "Facebook clone with tech incline"... it has to remain a place for concrete problem solving, retaining information for years, not minutes...

21

I thought (and hoped) so also. But, if some drastic measures are not taken, this won't be the case unfortunately. Current concept would with the most certainty invoke a change in the content, reducing to minimum concrete problem solving information. Just as an example, 6 question under SAP FI tag in the last 4 days, while a 'normal' day in FI space would have accounted for 120-160 threads.

4

I was looking for the "quote" tag, but I can't find it. :(

"Well, it happened already back in 2012, when new SCN was introduced." << Agree!

This new site reminds me a lot all the "pain" we suffer in 2012.

Destroyed forums and applies "spaces". Now WHAT! What is all "this" Q&A site? =(

1

It's been 2 days and I see a huge drop in activities related to SAP BusinessObjects products/platform areas.
We used to have 50-60 posts or more a day in BI Platform and Web Intelligence spaces - I saw one new question posted last 2 days.

Hope this changes, because if our customers abandon SCN - they will log more support Incidents instead. And that will be a negative trend.

8

"This will be a negative trend". Maybe non-SAP employee moderators think differently. ;-)

3

true, life is full of opposing views :)

1

But I think those who did this change were SAP employees, weren't they?

Sometimes I think, there are too many of them.
So they get bored and change every support platform as soon as you get used to it and begin to work efficient with it:-)

2

Where exactly can we log support incidents? I'm getting the runaround from everyone and there seems to be bugs in ATTP or its documentation.

Not to mention the additional frustration of this site being wildly broken and getting terrible response ("as designed") from the site support.

I really don’t like new SCN. In couple of blogs it was mentioned focus on the quality rather than quantity. I could not see any quality with releasing new SCN. Best example is in last two days questions are more raised about the issues/defect in new SCN rather to actual issues or problems.

Purpose of introducing Karma is to focus on quality but KARMA itself is not working properly.

SAP is releasing same time new products and talking about performance but here we have a excel file to find out the TAGS. This is not justifying the SAP Products. Sorry to say but it’s true.

I don’t understand if new SCN is not ready with the expected functionality then why it is released. You can still continue with the old one for time being.

It’s very difficult to me to understand when I am active user since 2010 then how new users are going to be understand.

Regards,

Amit

I believe that is why according to Marketing strategy which is why we get question in SCN that do you like the new SCN? Frankly speaking in these kind of similar contents will likely get more Yes then No, but the voting rates will also be high. But I was wondering though what is someone posts a voting poll or ask for feedback by simply asking do you find difficulty in the new SCN or would prefer the old SCN matters/ways? then I would wonder how many votes(Yes or No) would be here supporting the fact over the old question

Thanks,

Kaushik

Agree with your points..

0

Did anyone ask in old SCN "do you need a totally new SCN"?

Maybe that question could have saved some money for SAP :)

1

Oliver explains here why they decided to move away from the old platform (sorry about posting the whole blog link, I am too tired now to figure out how a direct link to a blog comment should look like):

https://blogs.sap.com/2016/09/27/inside-look-new-sap-community-powered-by-sap-hana-cloud-platform/

Yes, a move was probably necessary, and SAP might save money from website maintenance in the long term. Unfortunately, the result is... OK, you see the result...

Hi Chris, sorry there is no going back.

But this didn't fix the problem with the old site at all

0

Too bad ... the new version pretty much killed this platform as a useful discussion forum. :-(

yes the old version was so much better

Things which are IMHO worse now:

  • SCN "Spaces" were simple better than tags

  • Mix of comments and answers in topics (for example this one)

  • Default sort of answers by date is not possible?

  • LOT of unused white space without content everywhere

  • It is hard to follow topics that I participate in. In SCN it was automatic? and we also got visible notifications in upper bar

  • ...

Totally agree. What could possible be so important that comments need to be differentiated from answers? The important thing is to contribute as fast as we can without having to decide if my reply is a comment or an answer. And many times you need to ask several questions to the person who posted so you can propose a solution. That's not a comment nor an answer. Maybe a third type called Question is needed?

And I don't understand the structure of the whole thread. First there is a question. Ok. Then there are some answers (or comments) to that question. Fine. Then there's a section of Replies... wait, wasn't there already replies to the question? Are the first replies the real answer to the question or why are they at the top separated from the rest? I'm lost.

3

There is a very similar structure on well known StackOverflow forums. For example this topic: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/39726808/converting-a-string-to-int-set-the-int-to-0-if-string-is-null You can see comments under Question and comments under answers.

But here on answers.sap.com it looks more confusing (probably because that web layout HUGE wasting of space).

1

After having interacted with various forums like StackOverflow which I found hard to read/use for the same reason I explained above I stumbled with SCN and after using it for a while I thought "They just nailed it!". I finally found a dedicated space for my product with great contributors providing excellent feedback and a very good email notification system. The UX was excellent, concise, no wasted space, and easy to follow replies. Now all that is gone. The UX is just too fluffy and hard on the eye. And I still have to figure out how to find relevant Q&A about the product that interests me.

Most of the downsides are already posted here (confusing, waste of space, no email notification, etc.) and in my opinion the new layout is a huge setback compared to the old SCN.

The worst thing is, that old SCN articles are not completely available anymore (see

https://answers.sap.com/questions/30197/what-happend-with-one-old-documents-from-scn-nothi.html). User spent hours in order to create helpful documents for others, which hold also years after the creation still valid information for others. The SCN was a network for professionals to exchange ideas and to help others. The old and new posted information needs to be available completely and permanent. All in all I won't participate in the new "SCN" any more until the major drawbacks are solved.

Best regards,

Michael

Hi!

I think that the background of http://go.sap.com/community/about/using-tags.html has controversial design. It seems that this man has an "About Tags" plate as a head. And the woman on the right is shocked by this.

Hi Sebastian, in general I like the new design.

  1. But I am already struggling to decide if I should write a comment or an answer. I see that I am not allowed to comment (I don't know why), so I will write an answer.
  2. I am quite shure that this answer will not be seen by many people because answers are sorted by votes. Since my answer is new it will have no votes and therefore probably be quite down the list immediately.
  3. The use of screen space is not optimal. The interesting content of a QA list makes use of less than 20% of my 22" 1680x1050 screen and initially shows only 2,5 items:

  4. I am really very much missing the two stages kind of subscription. In old SCN I was able to follow so things would show up in my activity stream. But I could also flag stuff so I would get notifications about changes. Now I am afraid that special important content will be hiding in my overwhelmingly huge activity stream (you only have to follow one single fashionable subject like fiori to get a huge activity stream).

----------

Update to number 2.:

Yes this answer is last initially and even sorted behind the -10 votes at the end of the second page. So this completely takes away the motivation to answer to a longer thread where the correct answer was not yet bublished.

Hoping for better wheather.

Regards, Lutz

If it makes you feel a bit better, I don't use the default sorting by votes, but the oldest option.

I think, other members do the same - otherwise you won't understand the discussion - the highest voted answer is out of the context.

Personally, I don't mind reading the whole thread, even if it is several pages long - there have been discussion in the old platform with 10+ pages. If I am interested in the question (if I am the OP, I will be), then I will read all comments and answers - no matter if some of them appear controversial (a lot of negative votes).

3

Interesting to see comments on sorting by Votes - I haven't spotted any way of making a vote yet. Anyway, what would a vote mean in the context of the technical questions that are the bread and butter of SCN?

IMHO: Take thousands of secret Tags, add features from Stack Overflow and let it look like Twitter. Guess what you get.

Where are the forums ?

Show 7 Share
10 |10000 characters needed characters left characters exceeded

You are in them! "Questions & Answers" is the new forums platform. See the "Getting started" guide for more info, accessible from the yellow button at the top right of this page.

2

I think there is an error of concept here:

  • In a forum you could discuss an idea, or a thread for discussions.
  • In a Q&A site, the author post a doubt, and people answers.
2

You could be right, however, Q&A is all there is here. There's no separate forums concept. So things you used to post as discussions, post here as questions. Or as blog posts, depending on what's most appropriate.

0

sorry sir but this new concept is terrible or atleast will be until I get my head around it. Thats my personal opnion. I liked the old site where you had a separate forum per module or process area. I could jump into any forum and just read thru discussions or post a question. In the new design its all one big "space". How do I go to the MM forum or PP forum or QM forum ? I dont want to be searching thru one big space. Can we segregate question answers and blogs by module please ?

1

You can segregate everything by "tag", which is I think what you're asking for, so the functionality already exists. The problem is finding the right tag, which at the moment isn't easy. I believe that's being worked on.

For now, you can use the "Browse" feature from the "Community" menu to find community pages for topics, and those pages will list any corresponding tags. You can then follow those tags to have content appear in your activity stream, or use the tag pages to browse by subject (bookmark them, perhaps).

It is different I agree, and requires a little bit of effort to learn to use after the old SCN.

2

ok how do I list all the messages in the MM forum for eg for the last one week ?

0

Downloadable list of tags and tag pages now available on the About Tags page.
