BEx- Web: Saving views that can be shared

Hi,

I am on BW 3.5. The users access the BW reports via Enterprise Portal. I am creating the web templates using the BI Template Wizard (Analyst Pattern).

The requirement is to allow user to save views to either a shared folder or role so other user can access these views. When saving a view via the Web, the user can only enter a description and technical name. When clicking on 'open view' link, under the display drop-down, I can see Favourites, InfoAreas and Roles. Under Favourites and roles I see nothing. Under InfoAreas I see the views (for all queries) that have been saved. What I would like to do is have the saved views under Favourites or Roles, so other users can access the views only relevant for the report he/she is in now instead of having to navigate through the InfoAreas (since this is a bit too technical for the users).

Hope the above explanation of the requirement is clear (pls let me know if not). Any ideas on how I can get this working. Thanks...

Cheers,

Lashan

You can use the Broadcast to EP function and broadcast to the BEx portfolio or to a KM Folder within EP.

am not sure if this can help...

use

<your BW URL>&CMD1=SET_DATA_PROVIDER=dataprovider_1&data_provider_id=<view technical name

You can write a simple BSP to read the list of views created by the user and populate the same as links on portal and they do not need to navigate through infoareas.. We have done something like this here and it works pretty well...

Will see if I can put this up as a how to paper as well....

Thanks Arun... I will have to use this method if there isn't an option in standard BW.

However, I was under the impression that there is a way to set things up so that user can save to a "role" or "folder" via the web (with the need for any modifications), perhaps using BW roles and authorizations. When I click on the "open view" link, in the drop down I see "roles" and "favourites" (in addition to "InfoAreas"). If I select roles/favourites I don't see anything. What's purpose of these options? I could use it as workaround if the standard functionality is close to what I require.

Thanks,

Lashan

Lashan,

That was the first option we tried - with regard to using the role menu web item but then gave up since the views were not displaying and also guiding the users through selecting role etc would be more of a bother and hence we took the step of designing a BSP for the same.

Hi Arun,

Thanks for the information... please let me know if you happen to post a how-to paper on this. I will update this thread on how I progress.

hi I am facing similar problems. I have a web template with an analysis item in it. when i right click on the table on the web, i dont see the save view option. But when i execute the query in BI adhoc report( 0Analysis_Pattern) I get the save view option. I want to understand how I can save views from the analysis web item in Web reports i create from WAD. Thanks in advance

Hi Sunil,

I haven't really done this using WAD. Perhaps you might want to consider using the "BI Template Wizard" which you can download from SDN if you are using BW 3.5. If you are on NW 7.0 or above I believe WAD includes these templates.

Download link (also contains a link with instructions on how to use the tool):

Hope this helps,
