Failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect

Using Crystal Reports 2011 and getting an error for crw32.exe: The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tool for more detail.

We used to have Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (Version 8.0.61001) on a Microsoft 2008 R2 server. We removed that version of C++ and we not get the error that is specified in my question.

There are other versions still available on the server:

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 (Version 9.0.30729.4148)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x64 (Version 9.0.30729.6161)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 (Version 9.0.30729.17)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 (Version 9.0.30729.4148)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable x86 (Version 9.0.30729.6161)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable x64 (Version 10.0.40219)

Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable x86 (Version 10.0.40219)

Dennis,

I originally found the

https://apps.support.sap.com/sap/support/knowledge/public/en/1689645

link. We had C++ 2005 installed, but removed it because of vulnerability concerns. From our perspective 2005 has a vendor end of life of 2011. Do you know if Crystal Reports 2011 only functions with 2005? If it functions w/ 2008 or 2010, do you think the issue is that Crystal was pointing to the 2005 version and not it is gone that maybe we'd need to just reinstall one of the more recent versions we have?

Thanks,
Shawn

Hi Shawn,

you are missing the C++ library Crystal needs or Windows C++ library references are messed up.
You need to install correct/missing C++ libraries to resolve this.
If you search SAP knowledge base for this error - it has KBA's describing which libraries to download and other details.

I believe there should be some threads on this here and in the archive as well. So, please do use search.
