Java is not a necessity of SAP R/3 4.7 It could be on ABAP stack also.

Java is a necessary component of XI. XI requires both java and ABAP stack.

    Hey,

In terms of XI usage of j2ee engine

    Java Stack:

    -Adapter Engine (AE)

    -Integration Builder, SLD, RWB

    -Standard Mapping

    -Java Mapping

    -XSLT Mapping

    -CPA cache .

In terms of SAP 4.7 EE check this

J2EE Technology in SAP Web Application Server

Http is just one way to connect to a non-sap system

also when you mentioned SAP 4.76ee are your referring to XI's ABAP stack?

If yes, the j2ee engine for XI is required to host the adapter framework and the rwb

    regards
