Hi Team, I am part of the team implementing SAP S4 Hana. in our legacy system we had a Sales Part number and then an internal part number. for example the sales team will be selling "ABC" and we will then see that converted to an internal number "123", orders are received as "ABC" and MRP runs and operations all work using "123" During the project our management requires that we keep both part numbers in SAP.. Initially we wanted to set up Material Master with the internal part number "123" as the Material number and then have the sales part number "ABC" in the short description. I am surprised that the consultants are now asking us to set up both parts as materials and then use material determination. I am surprised that organisations using SAP are not using sales part numbers and internal part numbers and have not found a way to have 1 material master with data for sales, OA and operations satisfied? sorry for this difficult question?
I suspect there is some information missing from your question. Why would you be selling something as ABC but then use 123 to represent that material in your system? As a general approach, this just doesn't makes sense and has no benefit. This usually occurs only in certain scenarios, e.g. ABC is used as a "customer material" by the specific customers or ABC could be a BOM or something.
You might want to explain the business case in more detail. What's the story here?
Also use MM and S/4HANA tags.

You made mention of a key factor - legacy. Don't get caught up in legacy thinking while you are implementing the system as I would agree with what Jelena said in regards to zero benefit also. That aside, the system does allow for the concept of both speed code entry and customer specific material numbers as Jelena has mentioned.
