PowerDesigner for documenting SAP BW?

Is it possible to use somehow PD functionality for importing SAP Business Suite Data Dictionary to import/document SAP BW data structures? Do you have any experience with it? What other functions might be used for design of new SAP BW (on HANA) structures besides PDM model for HANA DBMS?

Of course, there can be simple reverse engineering used, but without translation of cryptic table names, the value added is not big. I can even customize DBMS definition file or script some automation as a post-reverse engineering action, but I need to know, what kind of information it is possible to get from SAP BW into PD.

Thanks,

Ondrej

Hello Ondrej

There was some work inside SAP regarding support for BW, just over a year ago, so I've asked two of the people involved to take a look at this thread. I hope they're still involved :)

George, do you have any news regarding documenting SAP BW using PD? Time is starting to be my enemy. Thanks in advance.

Hi Ondrej - For classic BW we recommend a partner solution Safyr by Silwood Technologies. Additionally, there is a session planned at TechEd, HBD118, that may help you which requires some extension by you to be able bring this information in to PowerDesigner.

But for BW on HANA, we are planning to support the Native DSO as part of our road map for SAP EA Designer, our next generation EA solution native to HANA.

Hi Matt, thanks for reply. We`d like to get by without Safyr. The customer is planning to use Information Steward and one of added values of integration Inf.Steward with PowerDesigner should be also to use PD for documenting their SAP BW.

I am planning to see your lecture at TechEd online, but September is too late for us. Is there anything, that you could share with me so I can use it for ducumenting existing SAP BW environment in better way, than just simple DB reverse engineering? We have 2-3 weeks to present PD capabilities together with SAP BW.

Thanks in advance,

Ondrej

Hi Matt, is it possible to watch the lecture only online? I found only registration for personal attendance. Thanks for your answer.

Hi Ondrej,

I think there will be some sessions recorded and then posted after all the TechEd are complete. But I am not sure which ones have been selected for recording just yet. I know in the past, I have had at least one of our PowerDesigner sessions recorded and then made available later.

Hi Ondrej,

the CEI George is talking about, will not be continued by SAP. We've (ifb Group) been asked by SAP to finalize the CEI... we have already implemented some additional logic to what has been done during the CEI (George was involved in that), but we are not ready yet... as we are fully booked, and non of our clients asks about this functionality at the moment.. it's not prio 1 for us.

Rafal

Hi Rafal, thanks for reply. What features have been implemented so far to better document SAP BW? Are you able to share any part of it?

Regards,

Ondrej
