What is the difference between Compatible unit and a task list ( simple or config. task list)?

Hi Folks,

I may sound stupid , I just started reading about compatible units

1) what is the use compatible unit?

I searched a lot and it seems very similar to task list (config. task list).

Could anyone please tell me know the difference between compatible unit and a task list? where to use CU in compare to TL ? why to use CU in compare to TL ? and what is the advantage of using CU over TL?

    Hi Raj,

    Compatible Units are used in Utility industry. It is generally used for planning of repetitive work, very similar to task list.

    Common examples for electric utility could be

    A) Install a pole

    B) Install a pole with a transformer

    C) Remove a pole

    Below points make it different from task list.

    1) A task list is linked to a compatible unit and In addition to task list certain characteristics can also be maintained on the compatible unit like action (Install and remove etc) and there is a configuration capability to link action to task list operation. Now when adding a compatible unit an action is also needed and based on this the relevant operation from the task list is only added and the corresponding material.

    2) There is also a concept of setting up an assembly which is a combination of multiple compatible units. This usually helps when repetative work is a combination of multiple compatible units, this way users only need to bring the assembly on the order and multiple compatible units and operations will get added on the order.

    3) There is also an ability to add multipliers when adding compatible unit. For example if we are installing 5 poles then quantity 5 can be set up on compatible units this will automatically start reflecting in the operation hours, material quantity

    4) The one thing which does not work for compatible units out of the box is sub-operations are not added on the operations but there are enhancement options available to help with this.

      Hi Raj,

      CU is like a master data whereas CU design is more like a transaction data created by combining multiple CU's based on the design requirement. Generally CU designs are part of capital construction projects in utility industry which are commonly applicable in the industry. I am assuming you are interested in the end to end process of the CU design. This can generally tracked by the end to end process of a capital design project. Where in first a proposal of a design is generated and once the proposal is accepted then the actual design is built (may be first in software like LD-PRO, design managers or CAD) and then based on the approve design, the relevant CU's are added on the design in SAP which is also synonymous to the planning phase of a SAP PM work order once this is approved the design is executed in the field and upon completion the order is completed. A CU design can be created separately and linked to a work order which then generates operation, however there is also a configuration option available to add a CU tab on the work order and the design can be built on that CU tab itself.

      There are multiple classification which are available out of the box on a CU (CU action etc) if i recollect correctly only CU action plays a role which can be linked to an operation, the other provide ability to group CU's with some technical property. For example CU for a pole could be a transmission or distribution pole with one of the classification fields holding transmission and transmission in the drop down. Hence one CU can suffice the requirement of two where the user will have to make the selection of whether this transmission or distribution on the design.More such characteristic can also be added based on the CU design for each client.

      This is really helpful , It would be really appreciable if you have any documenation for end to end process like Construction measure /CU design and than CU and what is the role of classifications ?

    Hi Raj,

    CU is package of TL ,classification,Sub CU's with EQ/FL ref. and it gets created as material record with particular configured material type.

    CU's are used to create CU design and multiple CU design can be linked to one construction measure. Later once the deigns is finalized for the work , user can release that design and can generated multiple work orders. Also CU design can be used in maintenance plan to generate WO. These WO's will have multiple CU which gets exploded into several operations as per job requirement with appropriate classification details to meet the utility reporting requirements at operational level.
