Caching in PI

Hi,

I am very new to PI.

As I know so far that caching is always used for performance reasons. This means that system will still run but performance will be slow.

Does that caching means the same in PI/XI or it has some different concept because sometimes it becomes little confusing. I have found a very niche How TO guide as well on caching and I have learned that there are multiple places where is used.

I would like to no if it is used for anything else other than performance.
