Migrate from Oracle to SAP HANA

Hi,

Enterprise is having ECC, SRM and BW system. All the system are currently running on Oracle Database. Data is getting loaded to BW from both ECC and SRM system using process chains.

There are different scenario in which system can be migrated from oracle to SAP HANA database. These are :

Scenario 1 :

Migrate ECC first followed by BW and SRM system to HANA database.

Scenario 2 :

Migrate BW first followed by ECC and SRM system to HANA database

Scenario 3 :

Migrate SRM first followed by BW and ECC system to HANA database

Scenario 4:

Migrate SRM first followed by ECC and BW system to HANA database

Scenario 5 :

Migrate BW first followed by SRM and ECC system to HANA database

Scenario 6 :

Migrate ECC first followed by SRM and BW system to HANA database

Questions:

If one of my system is on HANA and other is on oracle, what are the challenges. e.g. scenario 2, if BW system is migrated to SAP HANA DB and ECC & SRM are on oracle yet, is there any data load issue or any other reporting issue.

Thanks in advance for your reply.

Cheers,

Pankaj

If one person is going to migrate the systems from Oracle to HANA then you have to go one by one unless you are an expert in multitasking. If there are more people involved then they all can be migrated at the same time ;-)

As long as the systems are able to communicate each other then there shouldn't be any problem. If the hostname, SID and things like that are getting changed in the target system then you will need to adapt the RFC's and source system connection information. Have you though of setting up a new BW system on HANA instead of migrating the existing one? Once you have the new BW on HANA ready you can get rid of the old BW landscape.

    • HANA supports both row store and column store. Majority of the clients I have seen have BW systems on HANA with ERP and other suite products on Oracle/DB2. You will need to do a test migration (sandpit instance) and test it and preferably the BW team should test the migrated system and fix the issues if there is any. Having the tables converted to column store shouldn't create any issues with the connected systems as far as I know.

    Thanks Reagan.

Sandpit is what I was also thinking but that will consume some time and resources. I was just thinking if there is already a use case.

    Thanks a lot once again.
