Pete,

    Please see the below description

    Source : http://searchsap.techtarget.com/expert/KnowledgebaseAnswer/0,289625,sid21_gci1230025,00.html

IDocs are created when message types and (object) methods are distributed. The message type is the semantic information which identifies the usage of business data. The IDoc type defines the syntactical format in which the data for a specific business process is transferred.

    Source: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/wiki?path=/display/abap/ale,IDOC&

Message type gives the meaning of the IDOC and IDOC type gives the structure of an IDOC.

    Hope it clears!!!

    Best regards,

    raj.
