Dear Tushar,

As mentioned by Shibu, Geocoding is used to determine the latitude & longitude of any location in SAP APO. The latitude & longitude will help the system determine the Ariel distance between two locations which will used to calculate the Transportation lane distance. Ultimately this will help in determining the transportation duration (based on the average speed maintained in Means of Transport - Duration = Distance / Avg. Speed) between two locations & plan the shipments accordingly.

This is required mainly in TP/VS. To schedule the shipment properly, system must know the exact transportation duration. You can maintain the distance & duration manually also in transportation lane, but considering the amount of data involved in real life scenario, it is impossible to do this.

Geocoding can be performed on 3 levels.

1) Standard Geocoding (SAP0) - This comes as standard along with APO (No licence cost) - Latitude & Logitude calculated at Region Level (e.g. India & Maharashtra)

2) ZIP Code Level (RFCG) - This also is free (No licence Cost) - You can determine the latitude & longitude at Postal Code level.

3) Full Address Level (IGS - Internet Geo Server) - This requires Licence. Here you can define the lat. & long. even at street or house number level.

To my knowledge it is special softwares which can derive the longitude and lattitude based on postal address. Is there any production implementation using this ?
