Hello Experts,
Can the number of dimensions and characteristics be the same? Does that happen in general??
I have the following Characteristics
0_Account
0_Function
0CurType
0CostCenter
0CompanyCode
0Version
0_CalYear
0_Calmonth
Just as an fyi - the account and function determines what cost center the cost goes to.
What would generally be my dimensions ??
All answers would be duly rewarded with points.
Thanks,
Nandita
the account and function determines what cost center the cost goes to.
the dependency u r citing holds good in ur source system according to business logic .. but coming to BI(as the logic would have already been applied and the cost center been assigned), I dont see any difference this would make in the context of performance .

Hi,
1. Company code and Version in one dim.
2. Account in one dim
3. Function in one dim
4. Customer type in one dim
5. Cost center the last one.

Hi Nandita,
You can do the characteristics -> dimension mapping as Ravi explains. This will make the number of rows in each dimension small, since the characteristics are correlated, and make it more intuitive for query designers.
Remember to put those dimensions having only one characteristics as 'line item dimensions'. This will improve performance. For this reason, some prefer actually to put every characteristics into its own dimension, and this may be done if the number of characteristics is less than or equal to 13. Hence #characteristics = #dimensions.

Your dimensions can be:
1. Company code and cost centre in one dim.
2. Account in one dim
3. Function in one dim
4. Version the last one.
TIme chars the system willtake care.

It can be the same, if the chars dont have any relationship.
