Global definition of PLM/DMS

Former Member

Hi Sr's.

We will design our infrastructure of PLM/DMS for all the company. The principle we will have the HQ in Brazil and Engineers in branches of the exterior.

In summary it will be: HQ: Brazil (Global Data Center) - 500 PLM CAD users

Mexico: 15 PLM CAD users

Portugual: 10 PLM CAD users

China: 10 PLM CAD Users

Our great challenge is to be able to provide that the decision of business of the company can be followed, that is, to support our Engineering's in the countries cited with local performance and sharing between projects (average of 50Mb for project/files).

Would you have ideas and/or suggestions that can contribute?

- Sizing PLM;

- WAN optimization;

- Content Server x Cache Server;

- Common Problems;

- Cases like ours;

- Difficulty faced;

HI Gabriel

There are a couple of things that would effect the sizing so its difficult to say. Primary is number of CAD documents. I.e. 50000 drawings at 50MB each.

Its also a case of how often this drawings are revised, whether you intend using content versions, etc.

In cases with dispersed environments like you have discussed, you can run content servers on each site or cache servers, but it depends whether the number of viewers accessing the drawings can justify this. You could also create view copies of large drawings in PDF or TIF which may reduce the network requirements and remove the requirement for cache servers. You could pre-cache the documents to the cache servers before sending them to site which means you minimise initial traffic.

From the information you have given, its a little difficult to do complete sizing

Hello Athol.

I know that with these information is so difficult to analyze the all context.

I guess that the big deal is: We will have the single instance of SAP (in Brazil Data Center) and all the other sales offices and industrial parks will use SAP.

We are not worried about sales office, except our industrial park that will have Engineers working and design new projects (average 50Mb - Solid Work and Edge). So, this project will be shared inside the company.

For example: An engineer will create a project in Mexico. But there is a part(about 5 Mb) that be in Brazil and another peace that be in China. So, when this engineer create your project this part will need pass through the link communication and so he will have your project complete.

We are worried when this part of project that are not in the content server. If this engineer create 10 projects for each day, how many minutes/hours it will takes?What is the better solution for this scope?

There is always a solution to these types of problems.You could have people checking into local servers and overnight move or replicate this information to a central server when network traffic is down to a minimum. This way you can ensure all the info is stored centrally and locally.

Where possible I would try to store information locally for the guys to use (cache or content), because trying to pull 50MB files across the network to view won't be fun, depending on what quality of bandwidth you have. You can trial copying the files now and get estimates of timeframes.

Thanks again Athol.

But there is a solution to schedule (automatic) this replication over night in SAP solution? What is the name of this tool?

Have anyone here in this list tried to use wan accelerators?

Hi Gabriel

You could use one of the existing reports like DMS_KPRO_FILL_CACHE and use abap to execute this script or a modified version of it overnight.

Most of my customers either run content servers on site for local information, or have expanded their bandwidth to cater for larger files on a centralised environment.

I see.

And there is a PLM/DMS sizing / questionnaire available? Questions that should be answered to define correctly this infra structure (servers, links wan, backup/restore, etc)?

I have an old content server sizing doc from 2002. I checked for something more recent and I couldn't find any, but the principles for estimating disk space should be the same, it just won't be 100% for CPU and RAM estimations.

Do you have an email address I can send it on to?

Sure.

(gamancio@weg.net or gabrielamancio@gmail.com)

Thank you again Athol.

Hi Rehman, Athol,

I'm actually facing exactly the same problems as Gabriel, with the difference that the compagny headquarter is in France.

Could you please send me the documents you have for the sizing please ? My personnal mail adress is j_kubryk@yahoo.fr

Thanks in advance

Hi,

by the way, at http://service.sap.com/sizing -> Solutions and Platforms you find these sizing guides, also for other applications as cFolders / cProjects. Login is required.

Hi Martin

I noticed they don't keep the more complex calculations in the sizing guide shown in the at http://service.sap.com/sizing and the advanced guide they refer to doesn't seem to exist.

Hi Athol Hill ,

I saw your reply in the posts.

I also have the same problem can you please guide me how to run the report. IN that report there are two columns for RFC destination. one is for SAPHTTP and the other is for SAPFTP what i need to give there, and tel me how the replication will happen between content server and the cache server. What exactly i need to give in that report to replicate the data every day in the night.

please guide me..

Thanks,
