SAP Backup

Hi,

I would like to find out more in detail about backup. What are the backup we need to perform inorder to do a full recovery ? Eg,

1)We need to backup both the sap and also the database right ?

2)For database, if we do a offline backup, do we just backup the archive log ?

3)How about the redo log ? Is it necessary during the offline backup ?

4)What do we backup for the SAP itself ?

SAP + archive log = full backup ?

Regards

Hi Sumit

Could you tell me whether given below commands are sap commands or CISCO router commands

=========

  1. deny routes from host1 to host2 serviceX

  2. deny all routes from host3

  3. permit routes from anywhere to any host using serviceX

  4. permit all routes from/to addresses matching 155.56

  5. permit ... with 3rd byte matching 1011xxxx

  6. permit routes from host4 to host5 if password xxx supplied

  7. permit information requests from host6

  8. permit native-protocol-routes to non-SAP-server telnet

  9. permit ... excluding native-protocol-routes (SAP-servers only)

  10. permit ... if number of preceding/succeeding hops (saprouters) <= 0/*

  11. permit SNC-connection with partnerid = 'sncname1' to any host

  12. permit all SAP-SAP SNC-connections to host11

  13. deny all SNC-connections with partnerid = 'sncname "abc'

  14. open connects to host11 with SNC enabled and partnerid = 'sncname3'

  1. first match [host/sncname host service] is used

  2. permission is denied if no entry matches

  3. service wildcard (*) does not apply to native-protocol-routes

Hi Lauran

For doing full recovery all you need to have is a consistent backup and the logs generated after that backup.

1)We need to backup both the sap and also the database right ?

Taking backup of database means you can do recovery...SAP backup means you need to take non-database components backup like OS files...in windows NTBACKUP or in unix file system copy...

In a regular basis backup of database is sufficient but once or twice a mnth depending upon ur strategy u shud take backup at OS level.

2)For database, if we do a offline backup, do we just backup the archive log ?

Offline backup means u backup the database when it is shutdown. Db is closed to ensure that it is in a consistent state. Offline backup can be taken along with archive log. If your backup is fyn den archive vl jst be for additional security dat if by chance dat backup creates some problem u an use the archive log accrdingly.

3)How about the redo log ? Is it necessary during the offline backup ?

Redo log is not necessary during offline backup. Offline bakup means the db is in a consistent state and does not need any log files before the time of backup. Redo log are useful when u restore the backup and apply the logs aftr the tym of the backup to bring it to the current state.

4)What do we backup for the SAP itself ?

For SAP you back up the files/folders at the OS level like the /usr directory and the other directories related to SAP. On windows u take the backup of the OS files as well to restore the complete system in case of failure.

So there are multiple ways in which it can be achieved. Depends on the company strategy.

SAP + archive log = full backup ?

The above equation u cannot say it as correct actually as it differs for different situation. It depends on what you include in SAP backup...If u include everything frm DB files to SAP files + the logs then it is correct else if you take backup of only the SAP related files/directories and not oracle then it is not correct.

So better not to conclude in such a way and let it vary according to the situation!

Hope this clears all your doubts.

1) most important part is the database, the rest will help you fast recovery

2) noooo, you need to backup the complete database

3) not necessary

4) SAP backup means taking backup of /usr/sap , do this will a regular OS backup

read http://service.sap.com/~form/sapnet?_SHORTKEY=00200797470000049528&; carefully.

if you have a valid sap customer id then you should have received a sapnet (user) id as well which will give you the access to the sap service/market placd (= sapnet)

if not, you will have no access whatsoever...
