New Tag Browser has Arrived. Any suggestions on improvements?

After many months, the Customer Experience (responsible for the SAP Community) team has come to accept that the Tag Browser Helmut Tammen built (in November, 2016) is worthy of being included in the SAP Community. Built with SAPUI5 technology in the space of 2-3 hours, it was a large part of why Helmut was awarded Member of the Month (aka MoM) in December, 2016, Despite being 6 months out of date (until the recent JSON tag file update), it was still faster and easier to use than the Browse Community functionality available at present. If you wish to do the comparison, feel free.

To navigate to it, go to Community (black header menu) - Blogs (or Questions and Answers) then About Tagging. Scroll down until you see Managed Tags and User Tags and it is just under there with a nice call out for Helmut. [once again, Thank-you Helmut for providing this tool at a time when it was desparately needed!!!]

Yes, I am going to ask a question! I'm getting there!! Just be patient.

You are all reasonably familiar with SAPUI5 (or you are learning). I would like you all to exercise, test, try to break, etc. the Tag Browser. It was built quickly and well, but not enhanced since its first iteration as it was not accepted by the Customer Experience team until a couple weeks ago and not implemented until this past Monday (maybe Sunday?) due to some slight challenges with getting updated Tag information incorporated. The data source will change from a JSON file to making use of the Semaphore Workbench API (any thoughts on whether this will slow it down at all?).

I would also like to see it incorporate links to the respective Community Topic Pages as well as the links to the various other pages, but since the Community Topic Pages are probably going to undergo significant changes in the coming weeks, there are probably other enhancements which would have greater value.

So any other suggestions functional or cosmetic to improve it? No it will not have a huge banner image across the top! All other suggestions are welcome!

Thanks, Mike (Moderator)

Here are some of the documentation links for Semaphore Workbench if you need to do some more research:

Here is an entry point to the Smart Logic site for technical documentation (I made no evaluations of the content, just a quick search results) : (supposed to have details of the API Libraries and documentation)

I also found a few GitHub items which might help with the process:

  • A few things from my side:

    • Currently Area is shown only as a higher level item, which is not selectable, neither appears for the underlying items. Let's say I search for Ariba. I will get as a result several items. It would be nice, if one could see that SAP Ariba Live is an event in the list result.
    • Another cosmetic change (I hope, not too difficult): as we know, we have a lot of tags. If I happen to search for BusinessObjects, there will be a long list. Unfortunately, upon scrolling, the header area with the search box gets hidden from view and I need to click with left mouse button in the list, then press home button or scroll all the way up. Is it possible to have the search box available at the place, where we have now the text SAP Community Tag list?
    • Some tags have really long names (a while ago the longest one was 100 characters). The full description does not appear in the list of tags. As a result, it is confusing:

Probably, the column needs to be wider or, alternatively, display the full text on hovering.

Probably, there is a problem with the file, used as source for the data.

    • It would be useful in the very distant future to have an info button for each tag and see what this tag is meant for (the major challenge is to collect the information from the people, who requested all these tags)
    tags-list.jpg (179.3 kB)
    characters.jpg (26.9 kB)
  • Area certainly could be narrower to allow more room for the tag name. Possibly narrow some of the other columns as well? But I really like the hover idea as well.
From what I saw of Semaphore Workbench (and I do not have access to all its functionality), there was no description of the tag beyond what we see here. However, it might be present with fuller access. I will bounce that off of Brian Bernard and Jeff Mandl.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • Yes, the other columns can be narrower, but I am not a big fan of the hover option - it can be annoying on smaller screens, unless the text appears with delay after pausing on the line.

Currently, the tag browser does not make full use of my screen (1920x1080), but uses 1280 width. I do not know if this is too much effort, but if the window could resize to 1920, probably the text would fit better.

    Hi All,

thanks for using my app and the valueable comments.
I sat down and implemented them (hope I didn't forget anything).

The new version is available (don't forget to clear the cache, cloud platform doesn't have a app cachebuster yet).

Here is the list of changes I implemented:

    • Header with searchfield is always visible now
    • Show Link (Icon) to Community Tags page beside header title
    • wrapping text of tag if it doesn't fit in column width
    • Adjusted the columns width in general
    • Everything tested on desktop and smartphone

    Cheers Helmut
