Im trying to install a second instance of SAP with MAXDB and i get the following error during instalation

ERR: InstallRegistry::newPackage(): can't add Package "Base" -> "/sapdb/programs": already exists!

any ideas?

This is maxdb 7.6.00.35 64 bit installation. The current /sapdb/programs has a higher version.

I'm trying my fourth install of IM_HPUX_PARISC Java addon for ABAP and I'm getting the same error.

The first three Dev, Test, Production were fine. I'm trying a sandbox which is a copy of prod and this error is occurring. I've tried with the newest version of sapinst and still the same.

Ok, but it is possible then to have 2 different database instances sharing /sapdb/programs and /sapdb/data or am I wrong?

Yes i have no process running with sdb or devadm or sqddev , i shutted down the v_server.

Still no good.

I think im gonna change the /sapdb/program directory for the 2nd instance.

What u think?

I'd open an OSS call (or wait until monday when Berlin is up again and also here), because this is truly an error either of sapinst or the SDBINST program.

I'd not put /sapdb/programs somewhere else since it's the independent program path and it usually works this way, you've done everything right.

What you can do if you want to experiment a bit is, you can download a new build from SMP and replace that with the one in the subdirectory on the dvd, just copy the files over and leave LABEL.ASC in place. Newer versions may not have that problem...

As I understand I can use /sapdb/programs directory for several sap instances.

I made an Central System instalation , never seen this 2nd option you talk about, I can imagine there should be a check box somewhere to alert the instalatoin that this directory already exists, but didnt found one during instalation.

Could you give me more details about this 2nd option.

- Start sapinst

- Central instance (ABAP)

- Choose "custom"

- AS ABAP

- Enter System ID

- Master Password

- System Administrator Password

- Database ID

Here it says "If you want to use an existing database with a valid database release for this installation, enter the database ID of the existing database

That's what I meant.. I was on NW04 time where you could choose that option after the second or third screen...

But woudnt that create a MCOD database instead of 2 database instances, that is what I want. To have independet databases on the same host.

Hmm...yes - I just tried...

is the other instance up and running? If yes, can you shut it down completely (including x_server) and then try again? I think the installer does an "fuser" on the directory and finds out, that there are still processes running...

What are the last lines of sapinst_dev.log then?

What release do you use? I doubt that sapinst supports that by default on versions lower 2004sSR2...
