Dimension Changes

I need to add and remove a dimension from a cube. The dimension to be removed is not used in any reports. Is it better practice to create a new dimension and remove the original or replace the original and what is the reason? Thanks

Niten,

How do you intend to remove a dimension fro a cube with data still in it ? are you using the remodeling toolbox in NW2004s ?

Arun

P.S Since you already have a dimension created - use it for the new one instead of deleting and creating another.

Hi Arun,

I can use the toolbox since working on BI7 will this allow me to replace without deleting the data?

hi Niten,

yes, with remodeling we can change the data modeling without deleting the data.

with 3.x change the dimension we will need to delete the data, so using new or old dimension shouldnt a matter.

hope this helps.

Hi,

Your dimensions not used in reports.but internally the key are created.Star schema one fact table related to other dimension tables with the relationship of 1:n.so when u create a dimension it will automaticly generate internal keys.if u want to remove or add the dimension means u want to delete data only posible. oterwise u cont add or change annything from the cube.

thanks.
