Uusing a custom item category that is a copy of TAX. After the order is saved, the item caetgory can no longer be modified in VA02. Must delete item and reenter. Is there a way to override this field attribute behavior. Happens on all customer item categories.

An Item category cannot be changed after saving a sales order. So when you enter a material, you need to make sure what item category you need for that order.
If order is already created then recreating the line item is the only option.

what i feel it is not possible to change the item category once u saved the sales order only way left is to delete the line item and enetr the new one .

I think your problem will get solved if you maintain manually added item category in T.code: <b>VOV4</b> in the determination of that item category.
