computed output field

We are seeing a problem with created computed otput fields. Seems whenever we try to add a computed field, we get a 'NULL" error. I saw another thread on this same topic and it mentioned that possibly this was a bug to be fixed in sp12. Can anyone confirm if this is true - was the bug fixed in Sp12 and also - is Sp12 now available?

This functionality is critical for us.
