DI Installation without shared storage????

Former Member

Hello,

Firs of all, excuse my poor english! I'll try to explain our problem correctly, but please let me know if you can't understand me!

We have a complex network architecture and nfs traffic is not allowed between different network segments (all our servers are UNIX, but with x86-windows, the problem would be the same).

Untill now we had no problem because there was a single SAP server for each environment, DEV, TEST & PROD.

The transport system was configured normally, except that the transport file exchange was done asynchronously using intermediate servers with rsync.

Now, we have to add two additional "Dialog Servers" on different network segments, so they won't share the storage with the "Central Instance". Is this possible?

Which are the specific needs of real time file sharing between Dialog Application Servers and Central Instance Application Server? Can they be overriden with a similar rsync strategy? Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

jmiturbe

Hi Tanuj,

Thanks for your response, but I can't deduce the info I need from this note. Maybe I can't come to a valuable conclusíon because of my lack of SAP BASIS knowledge.

I used SAMBA a few years ago, but like I posted, file sharing is not allowed between different network segments, and SAMBA, on this scope, is a file sharing between UNIX and Windows.

Maybe, during installation it could be possible to allow file sharing if needed, but it's not planed to permanently allow this kind of network traffic.

So we want to know if file sharing is needed between CI and DI during normal operation, or if we can avoid this requirement, like we did with the transports between environments. Do DI and CI have to access the same files realtime? Can't these shared directories be asynchronous copies during normal operation?

Hello again,

I found the following SAP NOTE: 137478

...

...

Dialog Instance without using NFS

If you do not want to mount Filesystems of the central instance with NFS but rather want to use local filesystems for the dialog instance, these restrictions apply:

1. Transports are saved to /usr/sap/trans

In order to import transports in another system, they must first be

moved to the other machine.

2. /sapmnt/<SAPSID>/exe contains the SAP executables

The executables on the local filesystem must be updated manually

after an SAP or Kernel upgrade.

3. /sapmnt/<SAPSID>/profile

Default profile (DEFAULT.PFL, rdisp/bufrefmode) of the central

instance must be adapted manually.

4. /sapmnt/<SAPSID>/global

Local application server cannot access log files of other

application servers.

Anyway, thanks a lot.
