What is "copy as linked delta"?

Former Member

When assigning an iView to a role, there are 2 options: copy and copy

as linked delta.

What is the difference between the 2?

I'll give points. Thanks!

A delta link is a relationship between two objects of the Portal Content Directory (source and target objects).

The source object is the object that passes its property values to the target object. The target object is derived from the source object.

Changes made to the source object are copied to the target object and are visible there. Changes made to the target object have no effect on the source object.

The main advantage of this concept is that objects can be reused or changed without changing the original object. You can make changes to delta link objects (target objects), such as changing property values for iViews and pages, without having to change the source object. With the delta link concept you can protect your own objects and the content objects shipped by SAP and other vendors against modifications.

when ever after copying the object as delta link from any object, if you change the property of that object which you copied it gets updated as changed in the portal content area to indicate that their is a relationship between two objects .

Well for the first part in simple words i can explain you

When you copy and paste it as delta link there exists parent child relationship between the source and the target object that you have copied , that is when you make any changes to the source object that affects the target also, but when you copy and paste as normal object then there exists sibling relationship thats is there will be no more relationship wrt the any changes you make to the either of the objects, hope this clarifies you.

So for the second part

i guess you have copied and pasted as a normal /or asa delta link copy paste option and after assigning roles to the user and say you have logged in as end user and made any changes to the object say iview then it will come as changed.

thats it.

Plz revert back if u have any issues

Rewad points if useful and close the Qn(thread)

Hi Laura,

Copy is just like creating a new copied version of that iviw/role which now does not have any resembalance with the original one ( in fact the id also changes ).

When we create copy as delta link then it will copy the same iview but any changes to the original one will result in the copied version also. The id remains same.

Hi,

When you copy, the role will be assigned with a copy of the iView which means that if you will make changes to this iview in the future, the role will not have the updated iview.

When you copy as delta link, you copy a "refference" to the iview which means that the role will always point to the updated iview.

hope this helps,

Moti.

When I copy the iView to the role, I can see

Role_name

iView_name (chnaged)

For example:

MyRole1

MyIView1 (changed).

What does the "chanegd" mean and how to react to it?

Thanks!

Hi Laura

See the following links for info on copy vs. copy as delta link (the first has a nice diagram explaining things):

<a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/85/6b941c9795444c9b839d358c06242b/frameset.htm">Delta Links</a>

<a href="http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/9e/7d96d7087311d7b84600047582c9f7/frameset.htm">Copying an Object or Folder (Copy / Paste)</a>

A delta link is a reference to another object, and it inherits its properties from the other object. A copy is simply a copy of the object with no relationship to the first object. As was said earlier, if you change properties in the original object, the properties are changed in the delta but not in the copy.

Also note that the delta link relationship exists for each property in the delta link. So you can break the inheritance of some properties in the copy as delta link while keep the inheritance for others.

Hope this helps.
