Matrial Product Heirarchy

I have a questions about building product hierarchy for SAP materials.
Client is having SAP system which is working for last 7 years and they have not used product hierarchy function of material master.

In order to incorporate the PPS functionality in SAP SRM, they now need to set-up 4 level product hierarchy for materials.

My question is as follows:

1) What can be the possible issues for doing this configurations e.g.; Is this going to affect their past transactions in MM & SD?
2) Is there any SAP note which informs about possible do's and don'ts about his configuration about such a long time?

Does a SAP employee have no access to SAP notes?

A clarification to the question. Product heirarchy is to be built in the SAP ECC material master and then the data will be pulled to SRM.
