Hi all,
I tried to install the CE on a Vista machine but without success the install routine doesn't start. Are there any workarounds available?
Another colleague told me next day in the office that he tried to install the trial version of CE on a XP SP2 machine, but he also has errors and it didn't work.
No I have a XP SP2 machine here and before I waste my time again with installing the CE I'd like to know your experiences during the installation?!
Also a third question, does anyone know, when the complete CE with VC will be available as trial version/sneak preview or as rampup?
Thanks in advance for your help.
Best Regards,
Marcel
Hi Marcel,
I think if you re-read the reply by Ivaylo and the notes on the download you will see that Windows XP SP2 and Windows Server 2003 SP1 are supported.
The CE trial has been tested on Windows 2000 SP3 and Windows XP SP1 but is certified, i.e. 'supported', on XP SP2 and Server 2003 SP1.
RE: The virtualisation products it looks like a Vista host is supported on VMWare Workstation 6.0 Beta RC1 and presumably the final release. The final product release will cost you although the Beta is free until it expires. Also MS Virtual PC 2007 supports Vista (Business, Enterprise, Ultimate) as a host and I believe that this is free. Not sure about MS Virtual Server.
I use VMWare Workstation to install all of the test drives and haven't had any real problems with using the product. There are probably Virtual PC .vs. VMWare product comparisons about is you search on Google.

Hi George,
today I installed Virtual PC 2007 and a virtual machine with Win XP. Then I started the installation of the trial CE, but without success, the installation ends with an error.
Here is the end of the log file:

What version of WIndows XP is this, i.e. Home or Professional...? Do you have logon username/password enabled? What user are you using to perform the installation and what group(s) is the user a member of?
Thanks,
GMA

Hi Marcel,
your issue on XP seems to be a (shortly) known issue. Here's a workaround I got from a colleague:
"
To get the MaxDB database started automatically with the engine some
permissions has to be set for the user "LOCAL SERVICE"
This fails on the German version of Windows because there the use is called:
"LOKALER DIENST"
So when they use German Windows the installation fails here:
install.log:

This error happens when you install the SDN Preview on a German version of
Windows.
On this OS the user "LOCAL SERVICE" is called "LOKALEN DIENST".
The user LOCAL SERVICE is a special internal user ( Like LocalSystem)
without rights.
At this time there is only a workaround to fix this error:
1.) Stop the installer.
2.) Set the permission by hand.
- Open the windows explorer and navigate to the folder ( in this
case c:\sapdb\data\wrk).
- Right click -> Properties -> Tab permissions -> Add
- Now type in this case sensitiv: "LOKALER DIENST" (without the ").
- Set the permissions to FULL Control
If that worked fine. Goto C:\usr\sap\SID\insthome\primaryApplicationServer\steps.xml with wordpad and search for ERROR
Replace ERROR for OK and start the Installation again (continue old installation).
Hope it helps.
Regards,
Roland

I don't know if the VMWare products are supported on Vista as a host platform but that might be worth a look. You would need a suitable copy of Windows XP or Server to install as a guest but that way you have the 'power' of the Vista host machine running an XP client.
Might also be worth looking at equivalent Microsoft VM products.

Hi Marcel,
the system requirements section on the CE Trial <a href="https://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.comhttp://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/1011818d-1abe-2910-5897-f72eb59c951a">download page</a> states clearly:
<b> (OS supported) Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 2) or Windows 2003 Server (Service Pack 1)
The version has also been tested successfully with Windows 2000 (SP3) and Windows XP (SP1), but is certified only for the two Windows versions above
</b>
So, give it a try on your Win XP system!

Hi Ivaylo,
I noticed the recommened systems, but my Vista machine at home has more power
therefore I asked for workarounds.
I hope the final CE will support WIN XP SP2, because all our machines are on SP2 and I don't think that our internal IT enjoy to hear that we need a downgrade to SP1.
Thanks for your answer, maybe someone knows a workaround so that I can run the CE trial under my vista machine.
Best Regards,
Marcel
