pp master data in BW

Hello,

This question might sound silly, yet I am desperate, I'm new both in PP and I don't know BW.

I'm frequently being asked to develop new reports containing data about the BOM or routing cards. We're going to use the BW content 7.0 in a couple of months, so I would like to know wether there is a cube\ InfoSet\ ODS or Query that we can use instead of developing new transactions and reports. I would be very greatful for any information.

Thanks, Eti

Hi,

I would strongly suggest that you do not use BW for this type of enquiry.

many people make the mistake of using BW for reports that should be extracted and produced directly within R3.

A basic rule is as follows,

If you want to report on master dat or transdactional data then use R3. If you want management reports that are of a high level then use BW.

There is no hard and fast rule or guideline but I believe that if you are a senior manager then you will use BW frequently for management type reports and occasionalyy use R3. If you are a director or head of an organisation you would normally use BW and hardly ever need to use R3. Any levels below this would normally use R3 and very rarely need to use BW.

I know that this is a very broad statement and I am nto suggesting that this is a recommendation, it is just that if you use BW for reports that should be run in R3, not only can you not get to the lowest level of detail (to verify the figures or look for a specific record (order etc), but often the data in BW can be misleading if not wrong.

The reason why data in BW is often wrong is that it is extracted from R3 OK but in R3 there are often many fields that hold the data etc. and unless you choose exactly the right fields the data is wrong.

An example is the stock figures. If you extract the stock figures to BW which stock fields do you extract? the unrestricted stock, the blocked stock, stock in transit, stock in transfer 9not the same as in transit). Was 103 blocked stock overlooked etc. It is not as easy as it seems to get the data right in BW.

For Purchase orders what qty and value do you use? What if there are schedules against the PO, what about deletion flags, release strategies, service order POs (the data is held differently in ESM POs), etc. etc.

This is why I maintain that the only data reporting that should be done in BW is high level figures such as "sales order values", PO commitments etc.

So I would not recommend using BW for reports concerning BOMS or Routings etc. this is just too low level for it to be worthwhile or accurate.

Just my opinion and one which I am sure will be challenged

Just for information I am certified in BW as well as MM so this is not just a one-sided view.
