Change the characteristics in infocube.............

Dear all experts,

I am having a cube, with some 10 characteristic and 3 keyfigures.

I have uploaded data to the cube.

Now i came to know, that third (anyone), characteristics was not needed. Instead of that, some another characteristics was needed into that dimension.

Now, without creating new cube, i have to insert new characteristics into that dimension, and i have to upload data for that characteristics...

Can anybody please tell in details stepwise ?

if you are on BI7 - the remodeling toolbox might help you do this ... but if you are on 3.x -

1. if you are removing any char / kf from the cube - you cannot do this without deleting data

2. you can add a kf without deleting data

3. you cannot add a char without deleting data...

4. You can add a Char to the cube without deleting data.

Go to the cube in change mode - add you characteristic - select the dimension for the same - activate the cube. then reactivate your update rules...

Hi Vinay,

Adding Fields ,

You can directly add the required Char and assign it in a appropriate dimension,

If you need historical data for the new field you will have do a re init , if not required you can just leave it to run with the deltas , the new field will have data from the date of go live,

Removing Fields,

for removing any fields from a datatarget, you should delete the contents of the datatarget first ,

then it will allow you delete them , you can add Chars or KF without deleting the data also,

And also while transporting you should delete the data in the target system( Quality or Production) also or else the transportation will fail,

So you have to make sure there is no archiving in place in your source system , sothat you can reload the data, or you should plan for a backup of the data before deleting,

you can change your model whithout creating a new infocube. if you want to add any char/key figure you can add without deleting data in your cube. but if you want to remove char/key figure and add one more you have to delete the data in your cube.
