New to this world

Hello All,

I am Sumant. I am very new to the SAP world. Although I am educated in entirely different field, I wish to shape my career in SAP. I have few queries about my entry.

1. I have completed my MS in biomedical engineering. I also have couple of years of mixed experience working in medical field as well as IT field. Will this be a curse or a boon for me (my education background)?

2. I strongly wish to go for functional SAP rather than technical side. I am well conversant with Java but dont have much functional experience. Can it be possible for me to go for functional module? If, then which one would be more easy to learn and easy to grab a job?

3. Can I learn that module on my own? How much time should it take to fully understand that module?

Please help me in this case as I am very much willing to start my learning A SAP.

Thank you.

Sumant

MS in BioMedical Engg itself can provide you good oppurtunities.Anyway, you didn't mentioned what kind of work exp you have in Medical Field.I guess you would have been in Marketing high end Medical Equipment to the Major Hsopitals or Pharmaceutical companies. If it is so then taking up a Functional Module like SD will be the best. There is one Module called APO which is quite well in demand but not many persons.

As you have said that you know JAVA too,you can consider taking up ABAP and be a Technical Consultant. In the coming days SAP is going to run through internet and requires lot many people who know JAVA with ABAP.Workflow is one area which needs JAVA.So,you can take up ABAP and groom yourself as a Tech Consultant.

2. I strongly wish to go for functional SAP rather than technical side. I am well conversant with Java but dont have much functional experience. Can it be possible for me to go for functional module? If, then which one would be more easy to learn and easy to grab a job?

The first part of this question is answered in the previous question. For any Functional Module one needs to have atleast 3-4 years of Functional experience. So, if you have the same and well versed with business flow of the respective module then with a bit of struggle you can get into SAP Functional Side. There is no word called "EASY" when it comes to searching a job.

3. Can I learn that module on my own? How much time should it take to fully understand that module?

It is always better to learn from an experience professional. Why because in that way you will come to know what exactly the scenarios will be while workin on a Functional Side.Added to that a lot depends on the kind of training you get. So,it is always better to join an institute which will provide the training under a real time professional.

SIEMENS you can consider if you are loaded with money and have genuine functional experience. But even if you had joined SIEMENS I recommend you to take the guidance of a real time professional. That is more and more important to get a job.

Reward points if found helpful (it will be on the left side of your question).

Hi Kiran,

Many thanks for your help. Its really a HELP for me. Coming to the point, I dont really have a sort of quality knowledge how the business process goes. As a matter of fact I was into medical device sales and then installation and maintenance activities for my companies and then I shifted in to IT. I was mainly into documentation, knowledge mapping, and life cycle management of IT projects. I know that Web Dynpro is a rising market for Java/ABAPers but I cann't find considerable openings for WD for Java or WD for ABAP technologies. Would you be able to direct me in this case. As I said I am not much versed with functional aspects of a business but still I wish to be in functional side of SAP domain rather than technical side. But, if its something kind of unreal then what would be the best alternate for me?

Thanks a lot for your help.

Hi Sumanth,

http://www.sap.com/industries/healthcare/pdf/BWP_OV_SAP_for_Healthcare.pdf.

Hope you would have gone through this pdf by this time.Well,if you are loaded with money I suggest you to take up a course in SIEMENS in the same area.Definitely you will get an edge.

As far as my knowledge is concerned I had never come acrossed any people who work in this area.Accenture is the only company which recruits people on SAP healthcare.I will try to get some info from my friends.

I see a good potential in you with the kind of exp you are having in this area, keep trying.

All the best,

K.Kiran.

hi,

This is really very helpful for me. I have gone thru the link and found out that me as a Biomedical engineer is having a good scope in the SAP world. But Sweetrani, if I choose to go for SAP Healthcare, will that narrow my career path? Also will I be able to get any training from an educated body in that case?

Thanks a ton.
