Hi, I'm trying to create a table inside BW. The objective is to create this table so that an Oracle Administrator can "Push" or "drop" data into this table in BW. I'm currently using 2004s, so I am having quite a hard time.... What are the sequence of steps required in creating this table with the end goal of activating it so that it can be "seen" and used... How do I activate the table? Do I need to generate a datasource for this? If I do, what are the sequence of steps that I need to do for this? Much thanks....
- Beleaguered B.I.
Phil,
If the table exist in the database and is active, then f8 is to display the contents of the table.
If you go to Se11 and out the table name and on the tool bar, there will be lsit icon and clicking that also will diaplay the contents.

Phil,
Now that you have the developer key, go to transaction Se11 and the table button will be automatically checked and out your table name that you wish to create and click create.
Before this, you must have the fields that you wish to have in the table, their relationship with other tables ( if any).
The screens are very self explanatory and let me know if you make it.

Philips:
A. Assuming that I have successfully created a table in B.I. 7, how will I check to
ensure that the table that I just created exists in the system? What are the
sequence of steps to doing this check? Will the administrator on the Oracle
side (see original question) be able to "see" this table?
When you activate the table, go to transaction Se16 and put your tablename and press f8, if the table is not active, you will get a mesage. This is a initial check.
When you create a transparant table in SAP, SAP creates automatically created a table in the database underlying. Thats why it is called transparent table.
YES. youur administrator can see the table with a SQL statement desc TABLE in the database layer.
B. Assuming that I successfully created a DataSource, how can i check to ensure
that the DataSource is indeed active and is in the System? What are the
sequence of steps to achieving this?
The last step in creating data source is to save / generate. Once generated, you can see the data source in RSA3. Run RSA3 and give the data source name and press f8, you will see the result.,
C. Is there a particular methodology or standard as to how I should create a table?
Can you point me out to a documentation or link to a "HOW TO" in creating
tables? Where exactly in the BI 7 system are the tables store.
To create a table you need something called developer key which is a long string of numbers. Check with your basis administrators and they will generate the key for you.
Once you have this, decide the structure of your table and we will take it from there.

<b>Thank you for that Ravi... I am indebted to you... Ok, I now have the developer key to grant me access to creating a table... What is next, good sir? What are the sequence of steps in the creation of tables sir?</b>

Hi Ravi...
Ok. I inputed the name of the table... I pressed F8... below the window, on the left-hand side is the message: "THE DISPLAY PROGRAM IS BEING GENERATED." What does that message mean? How Can I check if the table is INDEED active? Also... What does F8 generate?
Philips,
I am not sure if you can directly access a transparent table from an SQL statement / program unless it is recognized by netweaver. This is because SAP has a data protection layer to prevent direct access to the tables....
What you could do is have a transactional ODS instead and use it for the same with a DB/UDConnect.

Philips,
I am clear abut your question. Do you wish to know the steps in making the table a data source, If yes, these are the steps.
1. Define the table and activate the same.
2. Go to RSo2 and define your generic data source ; and your name in the customer naming space and chose whether it is master, or transaction or hierarchy.
3. Specifiy a delta field if you wish to have delta for this data source. The screen is very self explainable.
4. You will see a screen with check boxes in a tabular form; in this choose if you wish any field to be hidden ( not to be extracted) and which field to be made selection.
5. Generate the data source.
Note: It is better to have a view of the table to be used as a data source rather than the table itself. So, go to Se11 and create a view and it is simple.
There is a document in service.sap.com on this subject.

Thank you for that Ravi... Thank you for that. Here are my last queries related to that which you replied with:

Thank you again Ravi! Shukriya!
Thank you very much for you immediate replies. They are all very much appreciated! I feel inspired to do BI work now that I know I can ask experts about how to do things! However, please do be patient with me... I shall be asking again, and again and AGAIN. Cheers!

Creating a table has nothing to do with creating a data sources, unless you wish to use the table as a data source.
Go to Se11, give a name for the table( you cant chage this name once the table is activated), follow the namkng standards of SAP and your Organization. The screen in Se11 will guide you. You need to have a developer key to do this.
